Kassi's Top Moments from Sochi Winter Olympics 2014

As most of you know I love the Olympics!

Winter and Summer, I just love them!

And in true Kassi form I like to recap my top, favorite, shocking, and unbelievable moments of the games!

So here are my top 14 moments, in no real order, from the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics!

Before the women's skiing half pipe event the Canadian snowboarding and skiing team foamed this heart on the half pipe as the ashes of Sarah Burke, a freestyle skier from Canada who died from a head injury while skiing in January of 2012, were scattered on the half pipe by her coach.

It was a very heartwarming and heart breaking scene to watch and I'm sure there was not a dry eye there!

Just like the 2012 Summer Olympics in London these Olympics offered another awesome meme worthy face this time by the US figure skater Ashley Wagner when she saw her results after one of her performances!

Just as famous as the sounds of the Olympic theme blared on NBC during Olympic time is the voice of  sports commentator Bob Coastas. This year Bob started out the 2014 Olympics with an infection in his eye that made him sport his glasses instead of contacts and within a few days was so bad he had to stay in his room, taking meds, and getting better.

During this time his desk was maned by Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira until he was in the clear and his eyes didn't look like he just stumbled out of a smoke filled van in a Taco Bell parking lot!

Bode Miller is the most decorated Alpine Skier in the world but this pass year he suffered much heartbreak with a miscarriage him and his wife suffered and the death of his brother. So needless to say he was almost running high on emotions when he won bronze in the Super G.

During an interview after his win he broke down in a combination of overwhelming joy and sorrow. The interviewer stopped her questions and comforted him while his wife came over to take over the comforting. Shortly after this the social media sites were overwhelmed with nasty comments towards the interviewer for causing Bode so much pain with her questions. Bode soon said this in response to the backlash the interviewer was getting and it shows just what an awesome guy he is!

“I’ve known Christin a long time, and she is a sweetheart of a person,” Miller said. “I know she didn’t mean to push. I don’t think she really anticipated what my reaction was going to be, and I think by the time she sort of realized it, I think it was too late and I don’t really, I don’t blame her at all.”
He continued: “I feel terrible that she is taking the heat for that because it really is just a heat of the moment kind of circumstance, and I don’t think there was any harm intended. So, it was just a lot of emotion for me, it’s been a lot over the last year and that you sometimes don’t realize how much you contain that stuff until the dam breaks and then it’s just a real outpouring.”

Meryl Davis and Charlie White took home the first gold for a US pair in the ice dancing event! They are so much fun to watch perform!

Gus Kenworthy, a US freestyle skier saw the huge problem with stray dogs in Russia and took it upon himself to help the problem and found homes for at least five of them and took one home for himself!

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, both past Olympic figure skaters, came to Sochi to commentate for skating as well as some other things. But of course they had to do it in style! They matched their outfits every day and honestly I look forward to all their interviews or commentary!

The Netherlands was the team to be in speed skating! Not only did they sweep the medals in one event they came back and swept the podium two more times in two different events! She a great achievement!

If you missed this even the rock you live under must be super big and heavy! During every practice for the opening ceremonies everything went off perfectly and just as planned but of course that meant during the real thing a glitch would occur! That glitch was when the five snowflakes hanging from the top of the stadium formed to make the Olympic rings one of them decided it liked the snowflake life instead and decided it wasn't going to stretch out to the fifth Olympic ring!

This one was a heart breaking night for me! Team USA' Shaun White went in these Olympic games looking to be the first man to win three golds back to back in the snowboarding half pipe. But sadly that wasn't in the cards and his score landed him just shy of the podium stand and in 4th place. Hopefully he will return for the 2018 games!

It must be genetics because these three members are from Team Canada and all three went to the games to compete! Two of the sister medals while the third one didn't but how amazing it must be to not only go to the Olympic games but to be there and compete with your sisters!

Another heartbreak of the games was when Team USA's women's hockey team lost in overtime to Team Russia and once again won the silver medal for the second games in a row! It's okay the ladies did amazing, the games were thrilling and awesome, and next games you will win the gold!

And lastly in good humor during the closing ceremony Sochi poked fun of themselves with not having the people who made up the fifth of the Olympic ring to open, mocking the snowflake that wouldn't open in the opening ceremonies! Way to have a fun and good attitude about a big glitch!

So there are my 14 moments from the 2014 Winter Olympics!

Now it's on to wait another two years until the 2016 Summer Olympics!
